The death of twin newborns on Thursday reportedly occurred after they were fed with formula feed prescribed by doctors at the Old GGH.

The GGH internal inquiry committee, which submitted a report on the death of male twins, born to B. Parvathy and B. Narayana Rao, reportedly concluded that the babies were healthy until they had the feed in the morning. However, no negligence on the part of doctors, as alleged by the parents in their complaint to the Governorpet Police, has been found by the inquiry committee.

“The babies were healthy since birth but were not suckling, and doctors prescribed formula feed. Probably when the patient’s attendants were changing shift, they were given formula feed by the mother. The first baby lying on the mother’s bed turned blue and was taken to sick nursery care unit by staff. The baby was declared dead and the second baby who also showed similar conditions was put on the ventilator and died a few hours later,” an internal inquiry committee member told The Hindu .

Both the infants were fed with the formula feed and the first baby died instantly, doctors said. The possibility of babies dying due to chocking of food pipe due to improper feeding has not been ruled out by the inquiry committee.

When contacted, Deputy Superintendent A.V. Rao who heads Old GGH told The Hindu that the inquiry report has been submitted to higher officials.

Asked about the genuineness of the formula feed given to the infants, Dr. Rao said, “The product was prescribed by the doctors and bought by the patient’s family members from a medical store outside the hospital. The product is genuine. However, we have sealed the bottle and submitted it to the police for inquiry.”
