The unique Flamingo Festival will be celebrated in an elaborate manner as a State festival, with all departments taking initiatives to attract more tourists this time around.
The Pulicat Lake town of Sullurupeta will witness vibrant activity with an array of cultural programmes being lined up for the jamboree.
It is during this season, flamingos, pelicans and hundreds of different varieties of migratory birds arrive at the Pulicat brackish water lake surroundings in search of food. The birds nest on baringtonia trees in the surroundings including the Nelpattu sanctuary. In view of the immense potential for tourist footfalls here, the festival has been celebrated for several years by involving members of the local lake communities, especially those from islands like Irukam.
Sullurupeta is the centrally-located town for these lake communities, the reason why the festival is held there. The other places witnessing intense tourist activity are Nelapattu, Atakanithippa and Bhimunivaripalem.
“All the approach roads and tourist attractions will be developed for visitors at these festival locations. It will be celebrated as a State festival on January 9 and 10,” District Collector M. Janaki said.
Exhibitions of unique products and features of the lake surroundings will be put up at the festival venue in Sullurupeta during these days. For example, the Sriharikota space centre, horticulture and fisheries departments will put up their exhibitions at this venue.
Students of hundreds of schools in the region will visit the bird festival venues during these days with the district administration providing several amenities like sanitation and drinking water supply. For them, essay writing and elocution competitions will be held.
