Five Maoists, including Bandarapu Mallaiah, Divisional Committee Secretary (South Division), Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, and his wife Balavva, District Committee Member (South Division), Gadchiroli, surrendered before district Superintendent of Police P. Hari Kumar at Kothagudem on Monday.
Dalam members N.Ramana and G.Ramesh alias Ravi besides, Maitha Militia Commander, Chhattisgarh, P.Raju alias Iramaiah were the others, who surrendered. Ten Maoist militia members belonging to Venkatapuram, Charla and Dummugudem mandals also gave themselves up.
Chandranna, who is also the West Regional Committee member of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) of the CPI (Maoist), had been evading police for nearly 25 years.
He hails from Machupeta in Manthani Muttaram mandal of Karimnagar district and was involved in several major offences, including attacks on police stations at Manthani Muttaram in 1991 and Asarelli in Maharashtra in 2002.
He allegedly participated in ambushes that resulted in the death of five BSF personnel at Gajulapalli in his native district in 1992 and 15 policemen at Lahiri in Maharashtra in 2009. Chandranna and Vijaya, who also hails from Karimnagar district, cited failing health as the reason for their surrender.
Mr. Hari Kumar said the surrender of top, middle and lower rung cadres of the Maoist outfit showed their inclination to join the mainstream, avail the rehabilitation package and lead a peaceful life.
Kothagudem OSD T.Srinivasa Rao, ASP Bhaskar Bhushan, and Bhadrachalam ASP Gajarao Bhupal were present.
