In a tragic incident, five persons drowned in river Godavari in Dowleswaram near here as the country boat in which they were travelling capsized late on Tuesday evening. Three bodies were fished out and search was on for others when reports last came in.
The five, belonging to two families, hailed from Korukonda in East Godavari district. According to the police, Turada Jyothi (18), Turada Rajeswari (17), Komara Malleswari (30), Komara Satya (11) and Komara Sivannarayna (10) came to Dowleswaram to attend a marriage. After attending the marriage, they visited the nearby islands and started their return journey. When the riverbank was just 100 metres away, the boat, buffeted by strong winds, capsized. However, two persons, who were steering the boat, managed to escape.
