For the second time in less than one week, a fire broke out in the Tirumala forest.

The fire was first noticed about half a furlong from the GNC toll gate on the first ghat road leading to Tirupati.

No sooner had the information about the fire trickled in than the TTD forest authorities swung into action and alerted fire tenders who immediately rushed to the spot.

One acre destroyed

The fire was brought under control in about an hour’s time. About one acre of the forest area is believed to have been gutted.

Meanwhile, traffic remained suspended for more than an hour on the ghat road. Restrictions were also imposed on the movement of pilgrims trekking to the sacred town.

Pilgrims were temporarily stopped at the mokkalla mitta and were not allowed to trek further as the area where the fire broke out was adjacent to the footpath.
