Faulty road design leads to accidents on NH 44

May 22, 2014 12:10 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:26 pm IST - ADILABAD:

The apparent faults in the design of the four-lane National Highway 44 in Adilabad seems to be a major reason for many a road accident. The faults lie in the selection of places for breaks in the median and low quality work when it comes to the road level near bridges.

At many places, the break in the median is located close to curves and on uneven levels which proves costly for unsuspecting drivers. Most of the drivers involved in accident near these spots say they could not take quick evasive action as they failed to see the median until it became too late for them.

The breaks in median which can be dangerous, are present near the Kokasmannur junction near Ichoda, on the Ichoda bypass, at two places on Adilabad bypass road. These are the spots where heavy vehicles regularly meet with accidents owing to the ‘confusion’ thrown up by the sharp curves and the lines which demarcate the space meant for a vehicles turning 180 degrees at the median intervals. One of the most dangerous spots on the NH 44 is the one at the Junni junction near Gandhinagar in Ichoda mandal. The turning here is so sharp that most drivers fail to gauge the angle while speeding downhill towards Adilabad. The sudden curve in the road leaves hardly any scope for the driver to take corrective action and he ends up with his lorry turned turtle by the road side.
