April 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Hyderabad:

The State Minorities Commission (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) has issued notices to the DIG Hyderabad Range, Director General of Prisons and Superintendent of Police, Nalgonda on the encounter of the five undertrial prisoners and sought a detailed report on the incident before May 4 when the seven-member Commission will hold a hearing on the matter. The Commission registered three petitions received by it on the encounter and commenced the enquiry process.

The petitions are filed by the Awami Insaf Movement represented by social activist Khalida Parveen, Maj. S.G.M. Quadri of Help Hyderabad and Lateef Mohd Khan of Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee raising doubts about the police version of the encounter. The Commission plans to appoint an Advocate Commission, if necessary, to enquire into the incident. Under Section 12 of A.P. Minorities Commission Act of 1998 it has powers to summon and enforce attendance of any person from any part of the State and also call for documents from any office.

“We will use the powers given to us to examine witnesses and records,” said Abid Rasool Khan, chairman, State Minorities Commission.
