Elephants on rampage again in Kuppam

November 20, 2014 12:08 am | Updated 12:08 am IST - CHITTOOR:

After a lull of a few days, two herds of elephants extensively damaged standing crops of paddy in two locations in Kuppam mandal in the last 24 hours. A seven-member herd from Tamil Nadu forests emerged into the paddy fields at Marrapalle village in the early hours of Wednesday, and damaged the crop in three acres. Hearing the trumpeting at dawn, the villagers rushed to the fields and the pachyderms retreated towards forests due to commotion. The farmers of the landholdings deplored that they were about to start harvesting the crop. In another incident, a 13-member herd raided the paddy fields at Urlaobana Palli near Kuppam on Tuesday midnight, and went on rampage for more than three hours. The forest officials from Kuppam rushed to the village, and drove away the animals. Later, trackers were deployed at the vulnerable routes on the Kuppam-Tamill Nadu border. The officials said elephant raids in Kuppam have become a regular feature for the last one month, and their movement is expected to continue till the mid of January.
