Stating that East Godavari district has topped the State with regard to the number of atrocities against women, State Women’s Commission Chairperson Tripurana Venkataratnam has said.

Speaking to the media here on Thursday, she said that there was an immediate need to open a rescue home for women in distress and arrange corpus fund for providing immediate help to the victims of atrocities in the district.

“It is unfortunate that there is no rescue home to provide immediate shelter to the women victims in the district. The government is providing ex gratia to the victims, but it is a time consuming process owing to administrative reasons. In the meanwhile, a sum can be given to the victims from the corpus fund arranged at the district level under the chairmanship of the Collector,” she said.

Expressing concern over the increasing belt shops in the State, Ms. Venkataratnam said that rise in liquor consumption was one of the prime reasons for increasing number of atrocities against women. “We demand that the government close the belt shops immediately. We wish the women launch a movement against these shops,” she said.

She said that there was a need to increase the number of women police stations and recruit more women police personnel. “Installing closed circuit cameras at all public places may be of some help to reduce the number atrocities against women,” she opined.
