Efforts to rescue girl trapped in borewell fail due to sand slippage

August 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:50 am IST - NELLORE:

As it was loose soil consisting of mostly sand, 3-year-old Mounika could not be rescued from the borewell she got trapped in at her grandparents’ house at Nandemmapuram village near Kavali in Nellore district on Thursday.

The rescue efforts proved very difficult though the officials pressed two earthmovers into the operations during the night.

As the machines set out to dig soil around the borewell, some of the outlying sand started slipping into the vacant gap where the girl was trapped nearly about 20 to 25 feet deep below the ground level.

Ambulance kept ready

A 108 ambulance and a team of doctors were made available to provide immediate treatment once the girl was taken out.

The girl came to her grandparents’ house along with her mother Tirupatamma who is pregnant. A drinking water borewell was recently dug there while the gap between the borewell tube and soil was yet to be filled up.

Mounika, who was playing around alone in the evening, got trapped in the gap. For several hours, the family members could not trace her. They finally found that she was trapped in the borewell and the information reached the local leaders and officials. District Collector R. Mutyala Raju, Joint Collector A. Md. Imtiyaz and other officials rushed to the spot and instructed the MRO and other officials to take every step help available to rescue the girl and help the family.

The family members told the officials that they were going to fill the gap soon but the incident had taken place resulting in the death of their girl.

The officials asked borewell contractors and the owners to take all the precautionary measures while carrying out digging works and take preventive steps in the surroundings to avoid such tragedies.
