D.V. Subba Rao for top BCCI post?

He stands a good chance as local people feel that he has a clean image

The name of president of Andhra Cricket Association, D.V. Subba Rao, is making the rounds as a candidate for the post of BCCI president in case the present president N. Srinivasan resigns or is removed from the post following arrest of his son-in-law in the IPL betting scandal.

However, Mr. Subba Rao said he has not been sounded by any one. “I have absolutely no information and no one contacted me. I don’t know how my name came up,” the 81-year-old eminent advocate said here on Saturday.

First Mr. Srinivasan has to resign or be removed which needs at least 10 members seeking a general body meeting to decide his fate. Here it is a number game, Mr. Subba Rao said.

Then there are many heavyweights keen to take the job, like Rajeev Shukla, Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi, Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, and Laloo Prasad Yadav, Mr. Subba Rao said.

But ACA and locals strongly feel that Mr. Subba Rao stands a very good chance of becoming BCCI president since the organisation is looking for a non-controversial personality with a clean image and having quality administrative experience. Mr. Subba Rao fits the bill since he has a record of being ACA president for a long time, elected to the prestigious post of Chairman of Bar Council of India twice, has been Mayor of the city, member of the Justice V.S. Malimath Committee on reforms of criminal justice and held many positions in BCCI in the past. He was also manager of the Sachin Tendulkar-led Indian team to West Indies in 1997. At present he is member of BCCI’s constitution and by-laws committee. In November 2003 he conducted an inquiry into the allegations made by two of the then senior national selectors Kiran More and Pranob Roy that a Maharashtra player Abhijit Kale offered them bribe to accommodate him in the Indian team. Mr. Subba Rao was Chairman of Bar Council of India at that time. Later BCCI suspended Kale for three years.

Mr. Subba Rao led Andhra University team in the all-India inter-university cricket tournament in the past.
