Avarice of some private medical professionals to make a fast buck at the cost lives of gullible rural masses by performing surgeries for ordinary stomach pain as appendicitis on schoolchildren and hysterectomy on the women has come to light in Sircilla and Jagtial revenue divisions in Karimnagar district.
The conduct of appendicitis and hysterectomy surgeries was very high in the Kathalapur mandal in particular. During a visit to this mandal, it was found that children were having scars of surgeries on their stomach and the womenfolk seen wailing about the removal of uterus by the private doctors in the name of various diseases when they approached them for treatment of stomach pain.
Due to non-availability of proper medicare in the government hospitals, the villagers solely rely on the local RMPs and PMPs for treatment of various ailments.
These RMPs and PMPs colluded with the some private medical practitioners in Korutla and Jagtial for commissions and encourage the unhealthy practice of conducting surgeries to make a fast buck.
It was surprising to note that more than 63 appendicitis surgeries were performed on schoolchildren and several hundreds of hysterectomy surgeries on married woman in Tandrial village of Kathalapur mandal. Majority of women, who crossed 30 years of age, do not have uterus as it was removed by the doctors on the pretext of protection from cervical cancer, fibroids, white discharge and other ailments.
Manoj, an eighth class student, said that when he was suffering from stomach pain, the local RMP shifted him to Korutla private hospital two months ago where the doctors performed a surgery and collected more than Rs.20,000 as fee.
Similarly, Latha, mother of Rani, a class VIII student said the surgery was performed on her daughter for appendicitis two years ago, but she still complains of frequent pain.
Fate of womenfolk in this village is different. When they approach the private doctors for stomach pain, they perform surgeries for appendicitis and hysterectomy also.
IMA State president K Shyam Sunder said the local Jagtial IMA branch and the Ethics Committee is conducting an inquiry and would submit a report to State unit soon.
