‘Disaster preparedness has improved in Krishna district’

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Mandali Buddha Prasad on Friday said that disaster preparedness has been strengthened in Krishna district, which witnessed deadly cyclonic storms, including the 1977 cyclone, in the past few decades.

Mr. Buddha Prasad and Krishna District Collector B. Lakshmikantam witnessed the mock drill on cyclone preparedness and rescue operations organised by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the Krishna at Edurumondi Island in Nagayalanka mandal on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Buddha Prasad reminded the human loss that was caused in the tragic 1977 cyclonic storm that is known as ‘Diviseema Uppena’. (Diviseema is an island in Krishna district.)

“Andhra Pradesh had adopted technology in disaster management, to prevent human loss during the cyclones,” said Mr. Buddha Prasad.

‘Land earmarked’

Mr. Lakshmikantam said that 50 acres of land has been earmarked for the NDRF station at Kondapavuluru village near Gannavaram in Krishna district. “The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, is engaged in alerting the coastal communities on the cyclones and other natural disasters. Such services are need of the hour,” said Mr. Lakshmikantam.

Rescue operations

The NDRF has displayed their equipment such as inflatable rubber boats, emergency breathing system, apart from demonstrating the rescue operations during the exhibition here. The mock drill performed by the NRDF team has highlighted the operations such as removing huge trees on the roads, satellite communication systems, self defence and rescuing people from drowning during the cyclones. NDRF Assistant Commandants Mr. Abid Ali and Mr. Singh led the mock drill.
