About 200 differently-abled alumni of special schools who have turned into highly-abled persons and are leading a comfortable life met at the alumni anniversary celebrations organised by the Woman and Child Welfare Centre, Shreeram Nagar, Garividi. Along with families they were seen greeting each other gleefully at the function.
The centre, a voluntary organisation established by FACOR, is running the special schools Drushti, Shabdam and Manovikas meant for blind, deaf and dumb and mentally-retarded children respectively for the past four decades. The residential facility has been imparting education in State syllabus to differently-abled children from class 1 to 10.
Addressing the alumni, K. Sandhya Rani, Commissioner of School Education, commended Ms. Promila Saraf, president of WCWC, vice-president Nageswari and staff for their dedication towards the inmates. “It was their commitment that helped the disabled children lead a normal life,” she said. She released a book titled ‘WCWC Alumni Profile’.
Vocational training
Ms. Promila Saraf explained the activities for the benefit of destitute women and children at WCWC.
She said that the centre imparted vocational training in tailoring, embroidery, soap/detergent/ candle making for poor women and helped them start business under self-employment schemes.
R. K. Saraf, CMD of FACOR, Assistant Director (Disabled Welfare) K. Jeevan Babu, District Educational Officer S. Aruna Kumari and others spoke.
Among the old students Ram Charan, Ganesh, Suresh, Venkataramana, Jyothsna and Surekha thanked the school management for the support and education that helped them settle comfortably in life.
Later, the school students performed folk, patriotic and message-oriented dances.
