Director General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy on Thursday created a flutter meeting a godman Habib Mustafa Idrus Baba at Fateh Darwaza in the Old City.

Mr. Reddy went in his official convoy of vehicles up to Charminar police station around 11.30 a.m. where he was joined by Additional DCP(Task Force) B. Limba Reddy. Both of them then drove to the Baba’s residence amidst tight security. Traffic was regulated near Fateh Darwaza throughout the 40-minute stay of the DGP at the house. The media was also barred entry in the zone.

The DGP’s visit assumed significance in the background of the Supreme Court recently directing the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe his assets on a petition filed by another IPS officer Umesh Kumar.

Due for retirement

Incidentally, Mr. Reddy is due for retirement on superannuation at the end of the month but he had moved the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) seeking extension of his term on the basis of a judgement of the apex court that a DGP must have a fixed term of two years. He had sought two years of service since his reappointment last year. The CAT referred the matter to the State government for disposal in two weeks but no decision was taken yet.

Sources said the Baba saw people who visited him with personal problems only on Thursdays. Mr. Reddy went to him carrying some files.

Several politicians, including former Governor N.D. Tiwari and former Union Railway Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief, had met the Baba in the past. The DGP was not immediately available for his comment on the issue.
