Demolition drive halted

July 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:09 am IST - NELLORE:

The demolition of illegal structures in buildings and complexes is being halted by the Nellore Municipal Corporation from Tuesday for a month following a government order giving scope for regularisation of such structures during this period.

The decision came as a big relief for the building owners and also the officials as the demolition drive has been slowly leading to a conflict with the public in the past two days.

The special teams have already demolished eight unauthorised structures so far out of the 98 structures identified as illegal by the task force constituted by the Government. The officials have informed that the building owners can now register online and get regularisation for the parts which have been constructed without permission.

The demolition of a 3-roomed house in the parking lot of a building at Lakshminagar in Settigunta Road area on Sunday evening triggered spontaneous protests from the local people who came out on the roads and confronted the police and officials. The drive had to be withdrawn following this sudden uproar.
