Though the child sex ratio (CSR) in the State was 939 (girls for 1,000 boys) against a national average of 919, a disturbing trend was the decline in the ratio in all rural areas and in 21 out of 23 districts as far as urban centres were concerned.

Yet, compared to urban areas (935), the CSR was better in rural areas (941), a possible pointer to the prevalence of sex determination tests in the former. The CSR was the lowest in Hyderabad district (914) and the highest in East Godavari district (968), according to the Primary Census Abstract for the State released by Director of Census Operations, Y. V. Anuradha, on Friday.

Nizamabad and Medak have shown increased sex ratio. When it comes to mandals, the ratio was the highest in Venkatapuram (1047) in Khammam district followed by Gangavaram (1043) in East Godavari while the lowest was in Nagayalanka (780) followed by Avanigadda (787) in Krishna district.

The sex ratio in the State has increased from 978 (women per 1,000 males) in 2001 to 993 in 2011. It is better in rural areas with a ratio of 996 against 987 in urban. The highest ratio of 1,040 was in Nizamabad while the lowest was Hyderabad (954). Among the other highlights was the emergence of Mahbubnagar district as second highest in terms of decadal growth rate in population since the last census in 2001. The growth rate of Mahbubnagar was 15.34 per cent but the highest was recorded by Ranga Reddy at 48.16 per cent. The lowest in the State was Hyderabad (2.97 per cent) and West Godavari (3.51 per cent). The growth rate of the State as a whole was 10.98 per cent.

The total population of the State is 8.45 crore and the total number of households 2.10 crore. There were 4.24 crore (50.18 per cent) males and 4.21 crore (49.82 per cent) females. The rural population accounted for 5.63 crore and urban 2.82 crore. The proportion of urban population increased from 30.80 per cent in 2001 to 33.36 per cent. Maximum population was in Ranga Reddy district (52.96 lakh) followed by East Godavari (51.54 lakh) and the minimum in Vizianagaram (23.44 lakh) and Nizamabad (25.51 lakh).
