Twenty-four-year-old Congress party activist Bada Satyanarayana died and another worker suffered injuries in a fire crackers explosion at Chinnaoutpally village on the city outskirts on Tuesday.

Minister’s visit

The tragedy occurred when the two party activists were participating in a rally, organised in connection with the maiden visit of Union Minister for Textiles Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, after assuming charge.

According to sources, the Congress party leaders arranged a welcome rally for the Minister, who arrived at Gannavaram airport.

While Mr. Rao was proceeding to Eluru by road, the party activists were celebrating the occasion by lighting crackers.

The mishap occurred when sparks fell on the crackers packed in a truck-auto and exploded suddenly.

Vehicle burnt

The vehicle was burnt in the accident. Satyanarayana and Erranna, who jumped from the running auto, suffered critical injuries, and Satyanarayana died while being shifted to the hospital. He was a resident of Krishnalanka in Vijayawada, said Gannavaram Sub-Inspector M. Shariff.

District Fire Officer V. Srinivas said a fire tender from Gannavaram rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames. The police registered a case.
