June 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 03:08 pm IST - SRIKAKULAM:

The CPI(M) has criticised the district administration for “harassing” people who opposed land survey in Polaki mandal, where the Japanese company, Sumitomo Corporation, plans to construct 400 MW thermal power plant.

Arrest decried

Addressing the media here on Saturday, party district secretary B. Krishnamurthy demanded that all those who had been taken into custody be released immediately. He said that A.P. Rythu Sangham district president K. Mohana Rao was among those arrested.

Mr. Krishnamurthy also demanded that the survey be stopped immediately.

‘Forcible acquisition’

He charged the government with trying to forcibly acquire land for the project.

Meanwhile, police forces have been deployed in several villages, including Thotada and Polaki, to ensure smooth conduct of the survey.

Officials have claimed that the survey is meant to study the soil condition of the area.
