A head constable was taken into custody for allegedly trying to rape a woman at Duggeapally village under Triupuraram mandal in the district.

According to Sub-Inspector of Police M. Srinivasulu, head constable M. Durga Reddy, 49, along with two other constables of Triupuraram police station hired an auto of a villager from Duggepally for patrolling in the villages in connection with the ZPTC and MPTC polls.

Late on Saturday night, the driver took the police party for dinner at his house. While the other two constables slept on the school premises after dinner, Srinivasulu stayed back to sleep outside the auto driver’s house.

Late in the night, the accused reportedly entered the house and tried to force himself on the auto driver’s wife. The panicked woman raised an alarm following which her husband and neighbours came to her rescue and caught hold of the accused constable. The police which was alerted took Srinivasulu into custody and registered a case.
