Hopes rise: Collector P.S. Pradyumna inspecting Handri-Neeva canal work in Chittoor district on Friday.

District Collector P.S. Pradyumna on Friday made a whirlwind tour of V. Kota mandal and inspected the ongoing Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi works. He instructed the officials and contractors to work in coordination to complete the project by July-end.

The Collector inspected the canal works at Dasarlapalle, Krishnapuram and Kodagallu panchayats. Mr. Pradyumna said that once the HNSS works were complete, it would bring a green revolution in the tail-end western mandals and boost the morale of farmers in fighting the perennial drought. The official said that he would continue his inspections periodically to ensure completion of both the Punganur and Kuppam branch canals of the ₹1,000 crore project on a war footing.

When some farmers from surrounding fields complained to the Collector that the earth removed from the canal works was being dumped in the agriculture fields, he directed the contractors to desist from such a move and cooperate with the farmers.

Compensation

Regarding compensation to the farmers losing their land for the HNSS project, the Collector said that the provision of award category would be put under consideration for those lands coming under the ambit of national highways.

Later, he interacted with the farmers and enquired about the prospects of agriculture and horticulture crops in their region.

Senior officials of the HNSS project accompanied the Collector.
