Collision of boats might have killed fishermen

April 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - SORLAGONDI (KRISHNA DT.):

The boat mishap, in which two fishermen were killed in Bay of Bengal near Palakayatippa village a couple of days ago, might have happened due to collision of two boats.

Two fishermen, Kokkiligadda Biksham (43) and V. Veera Narayana (50) of Sorlagondi village, died when their boat capsized on April 12. Four other villagers who went for fishing on the same boat survived.

According to the survivors, a boat hit them while they were taking rest in the sea. While two of their colleagues, who suffered critical injuries, died, the rest, who fell into the waters, were rescued by a local boat.

On receiving information, the Marine Police with the help of Palakayatippa villagers provided medical aid to them.

“On Monday midnight, we observed a boat moving on waters in the sea. A Sona boat hit our boat at a high speed and damaged our fibre boat which got overturned. Two of our colleagues died but we survived with the help of an ice box,” explained K. Adiseshagiri, one of the survivors.

“We never thought of being able to come to the shore. We spent the whole night on the ice box. When we raised an alarm for help, the crew on a local boat took us into their boat and we reached our village,” said another fisherman.

The fishermen alleged that a boat which ventured into the sea from Tamil Nadu hit their boat.

The crew of the boat sped leaving us in the lurch, they complained.

Krishna District Superintendent of Police (SP) G. Vijay Kumar said following a complaint lodged by the victims a case has been registered. The condition of four other fishermen who swam to the shore is stable, he said.

“We are trying to find out whether a local boat or any other boat hit them. Instructions have been given to check the condition of the fibre and Sona boats to identify the boat which caused the accident in Bay of Bengal,” said Mr. Vijay Kumar.

Meanwhile, the Civil and Marine Police along with the villagers are searching for the missing bodies in the sea.
