January 01, 2015 12:38 am | Updated 12:38 am IST - RAJAHMUNDRY:

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister N. China Rajappa on Wednesday said public representatives had a right to stage dharnas under pressure from public on certain issues, including cockfights.

Asked about his arty MPs and ZP Chairman staging dharna in Eluru on Tuesday against the police department, the Home Minister said that there was nothing wrong in staging dharnas and the police had acted in accordance with the court directions.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Home Minister said cockfights were part of culture of East and West Godavari districts and it was natural that people mount pressure on local public representatives. “I do face this problem from people of my constituency. But, law will take its own course on this issue,” Mr. Rajappa said.

It may be recalled that MPs Maganti Venkateswara Rao, M. Muralimohan and G. Ganga Raju, Zilla Parishad Chairman Mullapudi Bapi Raju and four MLAs squatted at the venue of the Vigilance and Monitory committee meeting, demanding action against police for arresting TDP workers on the ground of preventing cockfights.
