City gears up to usher in Ugadi

The city is gearing up to usher in Ugadi, the Telugu new year, with a string of traditional programmes on Friday. The district administration has decided to club Ugadi Utsavam with the Konaseema Utsavam that is under way at Muramalla.

DRDA Project Director and member of the Utsavam Committee Mallibabu said that Panchanga Sravanam, the reading of the Telugu almanac and predictions for the ‘Durmukhinama Samvatsaram’, would be the highlight of the programmes.

Felicitations

Felicitations to eminent personalities and cultural programmes such as ‘jugalbandi’ and verse drama titled ‘Kartikeya puranam’ form part of the celebrations.

A ‘Hasyavadhanam’ by Sankara Narayana will be organised at Dharmanchara Hall in Prakasam Nagar, according to Sannidhanam Sastry, editor of ‘Sri Sannidhanam’ a spiritual magazine, and Ghantasala Syamala Kurmari, senior manager in Yes Bank.

The programme will be inaugurated by Nannaya University Vice-Chancellor M. Mutyala Naidu. MLA Akula Satyanaryana and MLC Somu Veerraju will participate.

Ugadi utsav

The Gnana Saraswathi Peetham will be organising ‘Ugadi Utsav’ at Sri Saraswathi Ghat on the banks of the Godavari from 4 p.m. Leading astrologer and Vedic scholar Prabhala Subrahmanya Sarma will read the Telugu almanac. It will be followed by Ayyagari Satyaprasad’s veena recital and Maddipatla Parimala Haripriya’s Kuchipudi performance.
