While it has been a general practice to convert defunct cinema theatres into function halls, apartments and other facilities, a few theatre establishments may have found a solution to the problem!

On a par with movie theatres/multiplexes in big cities, a couple of cinema halls in the temple city have been revamped with latest technologies, some of them even renamed and rebranded, so as to offer quality entertainment to moviegoers. This is expected to be a rising trend among the theatre establishments as it will enable them to stay relevant to the competition.

For instance, the Devendra Theatre near the municipal office has now been transformed into CS Cinemas, whereas PGR Cinemas and the Sandhya Theatre are the other entrants into the scene, boasting of 4K Cinema, Dolby Atmos (moving sound via audio objects and overhead speakers), pleasant ambience, seating etc.

“Requirements of moviegoers are quite simple. All they want is comfortable seating, a few snacks, air-conditioning, quality sound and picture etc., contributing towards a satisfactory cinema experience. We have focussed on the same and modified the old theatre accordingly,” maintained C.S. Surya Babu, who owns CS Cinemas along with his family. Mr. Babu said that the successful revamping of their theatre in Kadapa district with 4K, Dolby Atmos, plush seating etc., had prompted them to undertake a similar exercise here.

He also said that they have made tickets available via online portals to enable people book tickets at their own convenience.

“The cinema business, be it any aspect, runs with passion. While it is commendable that theatre owners are striving to revamp their establishments, a lot hangs in balance over the long-term maintenance, frequency of new movies, moviegoers’ support and other factors,” remarked a Tirupati-based film distributor. He further termed the transformation of movie theatres as a welcome step and said that others following the same would change the cinema viewing experience in Tirupati.
