Commotion gripped the district jail complex here on Friday, when an undertrial collapsed suddenly in the morning and a little later another inmate tried to commit suicide.

In the first instance, Parthibhan (47), an accused in two murder cases, one in Vellore and another in Gudipala (Chittoor limits), collapsed suddenly while having tea with other inmates. This happened around 7.30 a.m. when the barracks were unlocked for tea. He was given first aid and taken to the Government District Headquarters Hospital, where he died while being treated.

Jail officials informed the family members of Parthibhan at Vellore about the incident.

Around 8 a.m., another undertrial Kutty (24) of GD Nellore Mandal, accused in a series of theft cases, attempted suicide by inflicting blade injuries on his self. He was also rushed to the same hospital, where he was put under observation.
