Buoyed by the State government’s procurement policy, weavers here are looking forward to getting their piece of the pie ahead of the festival season.
“Every year, the A.P. State Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative society Ltd (APCO) purchases handloom sarees worth around Rs. 200 crore from 25 societies in and around Chirala.
This year, the off-take from cooperative societies will certainly go up following the government’s decision to distribute handloom clothes to farmers during the foundation ceremony for Amaravati,” says APCO Divisional Manager S. Guruprasad.
“We purchase handloom products from all cooperative societies and keep replenishing stocks,” he adds.
The market for handloom sarees and other handloom products is expected pick up during the Dasara-Deepvali season and will continue till the marriage season next year, according to Sitarama Zari Weavers Cooperative Society president K. Vijaykumar.
