Child marriage thwarted

Officials of various departments stopped a child marriage at Korlakunta village in Krishna district on Thursday. The girl was studying class eight.

The parents of the girl, who was appearing for her final examinations, fixed her marriage with a 22-year-old youth. On being informed, Integrated Child Development Scheme Musunuru Supervisor Shaik Majeeda Begum, local VRO, police and ANM stopped the marriage.

Nuzvid Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) G. Mangamma said the officials had explained the parents about Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The officials bound over both the parties on Friday and asked them not to perform the wedding till the girl attains 18 years of age, said the CDPO.

“The Women Development and Child Welfare Department officials will follow up the case and ensure that the child marriage is no performed. The local Supervisor and Anganwadi worker will visit the house frequently,” Ms. Mangamma said.
