Officials of Women Development and Child Welfare Department (WD&CW) Department and the city police stopped a child marriage in Krishnalanka area here in the early hours on Friday.
The girl, a native of Vijayawada, was a 10-year-old and the bridegroom was a 15-year-old.
On information that a marriage was being performed for minors, WD&CW Project Director K. Krishna Kumari, Child Development Project Officer Suvarna, Supervisor Naga Rani and others rushed to the spot and stopped the marriage.
They took the girl into their custody and shifted her to a government-run home.
Later, they produced the girl and both the families before the Child Welfare Committe (CWC) and bound them over.
“We handed over the girl to her family after providing counselling to them. The WD&CW staff will keep a vigil on both the families,” District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Ch. Vijay Kumar said.
