A chemical godown was gutted in a fire mishap on Wednesday evening at Autonagar. At least two persons sustained minor burns in the fire which broke out when a mixture of chemical acids used in thinner was being transferred from a large can to the smaller ones.

District Fire Officer Sk. Jilani said that a boiling can caught fire at Karthekeya Chemical Factory at around 5 p.m.and it spread through out the unit within an hour.

Fire tenders were rushed from Guntur, Tenali and Narsaraopet and doused the flames. The loss of property was put at Rs.2 lakh. This is the second major fire incident in the town in the last six months.

In June 2014, a major fire accident at a chemical godown Rajagopal Nagar claimed a man’s life.

The godown was being used to store thinner, a mixture of chemical acids, used in paints. In both cases, the units have not obtained the No Objection Certificate from the Fire Department. The DFO said action would be taken against all such units which continue to operate without the necessary clearances.
