Employment should be linked to educational qualifications acquired by a person through college and university study, psychologist M. Veerender has said.
Speaking at a discussion on ‘Higher education – policy changes required’ here on Tuesday, Dr. Veerender said that in the backdrop of bifurcation, he was eliciting expert opinion with a view to apprising the government on the changes needed to make higher education more purposeful.
Students from classes VIII to SSC were facing undue stress, but given unbridled freedom in college, he observed. Teaching in higher educational institutions had turned out to be monotonous, he added.
Owing to fee reimbursement, private colleges were becoming a haven for the influential sections and lacking in basic academic standards due to shortage of faculty.
Many university students were skipping classes due to poverty and related problems, said a few speakers. Lack of patronage to arts was also a cause for fall in attendance, they said. Education should be reoriented considering the employment needs, societal and national requisites, they said.
