The Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (Centre for EEE) being established for the first time in India in the city to test electromagnetic compatibility of various devices and super-structures from a mobile phone to a ship or aircraft will be ready by the end of this year.
The prestigious project for which 13 acres was allotted on September 29, 2014, on the city outskirts at Gambheeram is being implemented on a fast-track basis.
The project is established by the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research Centre (SAMEER), an autonomous body set up by the Department of Electronics and IT (DeitY) under the Ministry of Communications and IT.
The Centre has granted ₹80 crore for the R&D complex.
SAMEER has its headquarters in Mumbai and R&D centres in Navi Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
The construction activity at Gambheeram, adjoining the Indian Institute of Management, is going on in full swing and will be completed in a couple of months. At present, 90% of construction work is over.
Two equipments had been brought here by air and another – pulse current injection machine – was being brought by ship from Switzerland, SAMEER-Vizag Director B. Subba Rao told The Hindu .

The Central Public Works Department has been given the work order.
The total project is scheduled to be completed in three years.
“The installation work will take some time, and the first phase of operations will start by the end of this year,” Dr. Rao said.
He said the Research and Development complex would be useful for various applications in the field of defence, telecom, and satellites.
SAMEER was one of the promises made by the National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre post-bifurcation.
Strategic location
Visakhapatnam was zeroed in due to its strategic location – the presence of defence organisations like Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, Ship Building Centre, Eastern Naval Command, Naval Alternate Operational Base, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, and major industries like Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and HPCL Visakh Refinery.
