In a few months from now, devotees visiting the temple city of Tirupati can unwind from their pilgrimage by browsing Internet at selected locations, including the transit points, of one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the country.
BSNL will be setting up nearly 27 Wi-Fi hotspots in the city, to offer better and comprehensive Internet connectivity services to the denizens.
“We have identified areas for setting up the hotspots in the city and proposals (of the project) have already been sent. Once implemented, customers can use the services by purchasing prepaid cards, which will be made available through shopping outlets,” maintained M.S.A. Nuton, General Manager Telecom District, Tirupati.
The officials said that offering Internet connectivity to the multitude of pilgrims visiting Tirupati, through Wi-Fi services, would be a challenge to the organisation and also change the perception of the temple city.
Landline scheme
To plug in the disconnections of landline phone connections, the BSNL has also announced to implement their scheme — ‘Unlimited Free Night Calling from BSNL Landline Phones to All Networks — All India Basis,’ from May 1 (Friday).
Though, broadband and data usage through Internet devices have registered positive growth in the region, landline connections in Chittoor district fell from 61,386 in 2014 to 54,652 in 2015.
“We are initially expecting a 10 per cent rise in the number of landline connections, after the introduction of the scheme,” said Mr. Nuton.
He said all major landline plans of rural and urban areas, including special and combo plans (landline and broadband) would be covered.
People can avail new subscriptions by visiting their nearest BSNL customer service or by calling toll free number — 1800 345 1500.
