Traffic movement between Kurnool and Ballari in Karnataka came to a halt following a breach to the causeway under construction at Salkapuram near Kurnool in the early hours of Sunday due to rainfall and gale.
The causeway across a stream that remained incomplete even eight months after commencement of work developed a breach.
Buses cancelled
All buses on the Kurnool-Ballari route were cancelled and lorries and vehicles were stranded on either sides, as there was no temporary road as an alternative.
Gale caused extensive damage to a banana plantation in 10 acres in Soodireddipalle village of Kurnool mandal.
Horticulturist Manda Sambasiva Reddy said he invested Rs. 12 lakh on the crop and lost an income of Rs. 20 lakh as the crop was due for harvest in a few days.
As many as 63 electric poles were uprooted in Chilakadone, Ramapuram, Suburu, Bhujuru, Peddapalli, and Madhavaram villages in Mantralayam mandal due to the gale, according to Transco official M. Purushotham. Transco officials inspected the damage on Sunday and took up restoration work.
The thatched roofs of 20 houses were blown away due to gale in Kosigi rendering the inmates homeless.
The homeless persons were provided temporary shelter on the government hospital premises. Uprooting of some electric poles led to disruption in power supply.
The roof of the section office of Gajuladinne project was damaged.
A large tree that was uprooted fell across the road on the outskirts of Kairavadi village disrupting traffic movement between Kurnool and Yemmiganur towns. Yemmiganur Assistant Sub-Inspector Khan deployed a poclain to remove the tree and clear the road for traffic.
