The organs of a 45-year-old person from Gandhipuram area of Tirupati, B. Chiranjeevi Reddy, were donated after he was declared brain-dead by the doctors of the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here on Sunday.
According to SVIMS Medical Superintendent V. Sathyanarayana, Mr. Reddy was admitted to the hospital’s casualty on July 27 at 7.30 a.m. and was reported to be suffering from severe diabetes and high blood pressure.
He suffered a massive stroke and doctors declared him brain-dead at 10.30 a.m. on July 30. On the same day, he was declared dead at 4.30 p.m.
With Mr. Reddy’s relatives agreeing for organ donation, arrangements were made by the hospital authorities to transport his heart, liver and kidney to patients at Nellore, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
The heart and liver were sent to STAR and Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam by Air India and Air Costa flights. One kidney was sent to the Narayana Hospital in Nellore by road and another will be transplanted to a patient at the SVIMS.
