Prabhakar is Congress candidate for Council polls

The State Congress leadership has finalised the name of M.S. Prabhakar as its candidate for the elections to Legislative Council from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency. AP Congress Committee president Botcha Satyanarayana handed over the B-form to Mr. Prabhakar at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, the APCC president hoped that the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen would not field its candidate in line with the understanding between the two parties entered into during the previous elections. The APCC was in touch with the MIM leadership in this regard. Labour Minister Danam Nagender who was with Mr. Satyanarayana refuted reports that he had opposed the candidature of Mr. Prabhakar.

Mr. Satyanarayana welcomed the party leadership’s decision on “one person one post” and said it was for the high command to decide whether he should continue as Minister in the State Cabinet or as the APCC president. “Given a chance, I will prefer serving the party in the present post,” he said.

Responding to queries, the APCC president said action would be initiated against associate member K. Srisailam Goud in line with the existing provisions as the Congress would not tolerate indiscipline.

Earlier, Mr. Satyanarayana who addressed a meeting of the Congress district and city presidents wanted them to gear up for elections in the “election year”. Elections to the Panchayat Raj institutions and municipal bodies would be held shortly and this would be followed by the general elections in due course.

The leaders and cadre should effectively counter the propaganda launched by the Opposition on fee reimbursement and other issues by explaining to the people the initiatives launched by the government. The district and city Congress leaders are understood to have expressed concern over the “leaders with suspect loyalties” who could harm the party’s prospects.
