The boat tragedy in Vijayawada on Sunday, which so far claimed 22 lives, orphaned a B.Tech final year student, Sujana, who lost her mother and grandmother in the accident.

The girl’s mother, D. Leelavathi, was shouldering the burden of running the family by working in a firm. Her grandmother too died of heart attack on seeing the body of Leelavathi.

Moved by the plight of the college girl, AP State Mahila Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari assured her of all support to complete her education. She also promised to take up with the government the demand for payment of compensation for her grandmother’s death.

Terming as unfortunate the accident caused mainly because of overloading of the boat, Ms.Rajakumari, while consoling the members of the bereaved families, said preventive measures would be taken based on the recommendations of a high-level committee constituted to go into the boat capsize.
