‘More of GenX should avoid lavish spending on weddings’

There was no cacaphony associated with traditional wedding as a NextGen couple entered into a non-religious marriage Guided by Andhra Pradesh Superstitions Annihilation Organisation State convenor P.Subbaraju, the bridegroom M Rahul, an electrical engineer in a company in Hyderabad. and Lakshmi Prasanna, an MBA graduate, entered into a wedlock sans rituals associated with the traditional marriage solemnised by priests amid chanting of vedic hymns and music.

Oath taken

The newly-wed jointly took a oath to remain united and face together the rough and tumble of life with equanimity.

A conscious decision was taken by the couple not to tie the mangalsutra on the neck of the bride, the traditional Hindu symbol of matrimony. No rings were exchanged either too by the couple. Instead, they preferred to exchange only garlands on the occasion. They also refrained from accepting costly wedding gifts. Friends and relatives of the newly-wed lauded their bold decision.

‘Secular wedding’

Rahul, son of local Communist Party of India leader M.Venkaiah, said more and more members of GenX should come forward to eschew extravagant expenses associated wedding which forced parents of many brides to get into debt trap.

Andhra Pradesh Rationalists Association State President Narne Venkata Subbaiah gave a call to assembled gathering to free themselves from the clutches of religion and prefer ‘secular wedding’ sans superstitions and exploitative customs and rituals while performing marriage to their sons and daughters. A majority of the farmers including tenant farmers incurred debts not only to grow crops but also meet marriage and other social expenses. They could reduce their debt burden by arranging simple and secular marriage to their children, felt Acharya N.G.Ranga Kisan Samastha Secretary Ch.Seshaiah, also a member of the Rationalists Association.
