Keeping in view the future requirements, the government has decided to take steps to augment drinking water supply to Nellore city following which the construction of summer storage tank began at an estimated cost of Rs.102 crore on the city outskirts.
Spread over 500 acres, the storage tank is designed to supply 8,000 million litres drinking water to the city per day.
As of now, water for the summer storage tank is being drawn from Sangam barrage and Kondlapudi irrigation channel.
Nellore Rural MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy, who had stressed the need for developing a strong drinking water supply system in the city, said the summer storage tank works would help ensure hassle-free supply of drinking water to Nellore.
He said there has never been a water crisis here and the present scheme would meet any future demand that may arise during summers.
The idea about having a scheme came up following hindrances in supplying water to city during this summer.
At the time, proposals were made to construct a tank at a cost of Rs.84 crore and the L&T Company bagged the tenders.
As requirement for additional works cropped up, the cost of the scheme was escalated to Rs.102 crore later.
These works have been completed and storage of water in the tank has begun. But its not full to its capacity for now as the officials wanted some repair works to be carried out.
The rapid expansion of Nellore city on its boundaries is marked by its population crossing 5 lakh.
As the demand is expected to increase, the people’s representatives made a strong plea for enhanced drinking water supply by creating additional sources.
As part of this, the government has cleared the proposal for construction of overhead tanks at a cost of Rs.18 crore. Works on these tanks are on.
