Three workers’ unions of Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills (APPM) Limited, owned by US-based International Paper Co. (IP), have threatened to go on strike from May 29 if the management fails to meet their demands immediately.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, T.K. Visweswara Reddy, president, APPM Officers’ Association, said the IP management was treating its employees like “slaves”.

Highhandedness alleged

“Relations between the management and workers are important for any industry, but IP is acting with highhandedness, with its staff being treated like slaves,” Mr. Reddy alleged. He claimed that the management had stopped the variable dearness allowance for 34 officers and normal increments for all. He also said the management was planning to retrench people in the name of poor performance. Keeping these in view, the officers’ association also warned of a boycott with the support of three major trade unions.

INTUC leader Joseph said the management had wasted Rs. 15 crore in the name of renovation of office buildings, and that it incurred a loss of Rs. 40 crore a month. TNTUC leader Brahmaiah and CITU leader B.B. Naidu spoke.
