June 03, 2010 11:52 pm | Updated 11:52 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The Power Finance Corporation, at the instance of the Union government, has sanctioned Rs. 388 crore to APTransco and the four distribution companies to implement a national programme to push forward the power sector reforms.

Tata Consultancy Services has been awarded a Rs. 231 crore contract as part of the Restructured Accelerated Power Development Reforms Programme to implement IT initiatives wherever required in the power sector to achieve the goals.

To cover all urban areas

The programme will cover all urban areas having a population of 4 lakh or more as per 2001 Census.

At a meeting here on Thursday on the programme, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah asked Chief Secretary S.V. Prasad, Principal Secretary, Energy, Suthirtha Bhattacharya, APTransco CMD Ajay Jain and other officials to implement the programme in two parts.

Under the first part, baseline data should be created in the relevant areas and IT initiatives used for energy auditing and consumer services.

Distribution network

Under the second part, distribution network would be strengthened at 11-kv sub-station level through renovation and modernisation.

The Chief Minister sought effective implementation of the programme to reduce the transmission and distribution (T&D) losses in a big way, saying power saved by way of reduction of losses was power generated.

Electrification

Officials informed Mr. Rosaiah that 23.13 lakh households and 13,292 uncovered habitations had been electrified till April-end under Rajiv Gandhi Grameena Vidyutheekarana Yojana for which the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 830 crore to Andhra Pradesh.
