Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday agreed to cut short the Budget session of the Assembly by five days in order to allow the Telangana Assembly session to commence on September 10.
The decision follows a meeting between the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at the behest of Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan to end the clashes between the two State governments.
Bitter exchangesThe past two months have seen bitter exchanges between the two nascent State governments and led to frequent sparring on issues such as fee reimbursement to students, cancellation of power purchase agreements and appointment of heads of institutions in Schedule Ten of the AP Reorganisation Act.
A major success of the meeting was the decision on appointment of heads for the 107 institutions in Schedule Ten of the Act which says that their management would vest with States where they were located.
It was decided that the managing directors of the institutions would be from the home State and the joint managing directors from the other State. The issue figured at talks in the background of both States appointing heads for National Academy of Construction and National Institute of Tourism Management.
Addressing a press conference later, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said the talks were held in a cordial manner with a give-and-take approach.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Naidu termed the talks as a positive outcome and said both of them agreed that they would be able to concentrate on development and better administration if their disputes were resolved.
He insisted that the Telugu speaking population should be united though the States were divided geographically. This was the first step and many more were needed in future.
