The annual Urs festival at Hazrat Khwaja Naseeruddin Baba Dargah commenced at Arvapalli village of Jajireddygudem mandal in Nalgonda district on Friday.

The unique tradition being practised here is unlike other places, the Gandhamaothsavam (sandal procession) was taken out from Arvapalli police station to the Dargah on Friday.

The two-day festival is a strong example of communal harmony as people from different religious faiths from across the district visit in large numbers.

According to Dargah committee chairman Saini Sammaiah, the Dargah was constructed some 600 years ago, but the celebrations were stopped for unknown reasons.

After understanding the significance of the Dargah, he said that they had started celebrating Urs since 1984. The devotees visiting here prefer to drink water from a well located close to the Dargah which they believe cures their diseases and offers a better life. Arvapalli SI Kondal Reddy and temple committee member Muzuvari Naseeruddin were among those executing the security and other arrangements.
