The State government will soon make it mandatory for all departments to use only star-rated electrical equipment to further raise the benchmark in energy efficiency measures.
Announcing this in a review meeting with officials of public sector power utilities on Monday, Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar said the programme would make the employees realise the benefits of star-rated appliances and motivate them to use similar fitments in their residences.
By virtue of their low maintenance costs, such equipment would generate substantial savings for the exchequer. He directed the officials to play a proactive role in Energy Efficiency (EE) and Energy Conservation (EC) programmes with emphasis on upgrading to 5-star-rated equipment in the near future.

Mr. Kumar stated the Chief Minister was keen on implementing a five-year plan for EE and EC activities in all the key sectors like energy, municipal administration and urban development, rural development, RWS, Panchayat Raj, secondary education, higher education, roads & buildings, transportation, and agriculture to achieve energy savings of about 15,100 million units per annum.
He further said even by replacing conventional electrical systems with energy efficient ones , there would be savings of more than 35% of energy as well as economic savings.
He instructed the officials to establish Energy Coordination Cells and appoint nodal officers for implementation of the programme.
Principal Secretary (Energy) Ajay Jain said Energy Minister K. Kala Venkat Rao already ordered that 5-star-rated appliances be purchased to take the programme forward.
