Several temples in Srikakulam wore a festive look with ‘Aksharabhyasam’ on the auspicious ‘Vasanta Panchami’ which is considered to be the best day to begin studies for children. Several parents came with their children to Vinayaka Panchayatana Devalayam, Sri Vijaya Ganapati temple and Sri Vijaya Dura Temple where normally ‘Aksharabhaysams’ are performed on Vasanta Panchami.

Vinayaka Panchayatana Devalaysam Trust chairman P. Jaganmohana Rao and team members made elaborate arrangements for the devotees who come to have darsan of Goddess Gnana Saraswati. Sri Vijaya Durga Temple priests Aravelli Suryanarayana Sarma and Phanikumar Sarma performed ‘Saraswati Homam’ and ‘Sahasra Kumkum’ and ‘Pushparchana’.

They decorated Vijaya Durga as Goddess Saraswati. The special prayers were offered in the evening also. The term Vasanta means the spring and Panchami means fifth. As the festival is celebrated at the onset of the spring and announces the arrival of spring season hence it is known as Vasanta Panchami or Basant Panchami in some parts of country.
