Consultant plastic, cosmetic and wound surgeon Sumita Shankar said on Saturday that many women suffering from breast related problems continue to live with them due to social stigma and added that solutions were available in advanced plastic and cosmetic surgery.

“Women after attaining puberty continue to live with problems like, breast lumps, small breasts, big breasts (gigantomastia), asymmetrical breasts, sagging breasts etc. But plastic and cosmetic surgery has solutions.

“We have developed procedures to correct size, shape and create new breast mounds through reconstructive and microsurgery through tissue transplantation,’’ Dr. Shankar said.

Some of the procedures such as gigantomastia and post mastectomy breast reconstruction were also covered under the government health insurance schemes.

Dr. Shankar, who had studied in US, Spain and Taiwan, has 15 years of experience as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon handling breast related issues in women for the last 12 years.

She had undertaken extensive breast awareness campaigns across State during 2013-2014 visiting districts and speaking to women on breast related problems.

She also conducted free consultations for individual patients with breast related problems.

“We have few avenues for women to share their problems unlike in the western countries. As a result, many are leading a compromised life facing health issues, embarrassment and social stigma,” Dr. Shankar said.

Dr. Shankar now works with Sai Bhaskar Hospital, Guntur and Liberty Hospitals, Vijaywada.
