Acharya Nagarjuna University is emerging as a solar power house becoming a leader in generating solar power on the campus.
The three main blocks, the administrative buildings, the library and the Centre for Distance Education, are now powered by solar lighting. The internal roads are also being lightened by solar streetlights.
“ANU has spent Rs. 2 crore on installation of 50 kwp solar panels on main buildings. We have also replaced all conventional lighting devices with LED bulbs,” Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor K. Viyyanna Rao said on Friday.
ANU has won an award from the State government for its effort to promote the use of non-conventional energy.
Each 17 kw solar generating plant has a capacity of 50 kwp each and a solar generating plant for operation of 3 HP pump set was installed and connected to pump set installed in front of the Civil and Mechanical building.
Solar water heating systems have been installed at Indira Priyadarshini ladies hostel, Amaravathi Boys Hostel, engineering boys hostel and guesthouse. All playgrounds are now lit up with solar floodlights.
In pipelines
The university will soon establish a 1 MW solar power generating station on its campus for which the authorities have already called for the Expression of Interests (EoI).
