Police foiled a bid by over 150 Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists to storm the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
The ABVP workers demanding the creation of a separate Telangana State arrived near the Assembly in batches raising slogans. The protesters tried to force their way into the Assembly premises.
The police and agitators jostled with each other and the heavily armed policemen managed to push them inside a waiting police van and whisked them away. The ABVP workers apparently gathered at the Telugu University campus near the Public Gardens and proceeded to the Assembly in groups to avoid the heavy posse of police personnel deployed on the way to the Legislature.
In the ensuing scuffle between the police and the agitators, vehicular traffic on the arterial Nampally-Lakdikapul stretch was thrown out of gear for more than 30 minutes. Even after the protesters were bundled into a police van and taken away, another group of 15 students tried to proceed to the Assembly but were prevented.
