In a swift operation, Assam Rifles and Punjab commandos have rescued a worker of a Hyderabad-based engineering and construction firm who was abducted for ransom last week from Maibang in Dima Hasao district of Assam.
According to information received by the Prakasam police from their Dima Hasao counterparts, about 20 commandos laid a trap on Monday evening.
They rescued 48-year-old Dandamuri Nagamalleswara Rao when he was brought by two of his abductors at about 5.05 pm expecting a payment of Rs. 10 lakh.
The ransom amount had been brought down from the huge Rs. 6 crore that was initially demanded, after protracted negotiations.
Mr. Rao suffered minor injuries in the operation and was taken to the government hospital at Maibang, Ongole Deputy Superintendent of Police P.Jashua told The Hindu. One of the kidnappers was nabbed.
Mr. Rao was working as crusher in-charge for Vasishta Constructions Private Ltd that is involved in the execution of the Guwahati-Silchar National Highway project between 84 km and 111 km.
He was kidnapped by a six-member local gang from the construction site at N.C.Hills on June 17 and taken deep into the forests on the Assam-Nagaland border. The family came to know of his abduction only on Saturday last.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rao’s relatives heaved a sigh of relief on coming to know of his rescue. “When I spoke to Mr Rao, he said he was fine. But his voice was very feeble,” said his co-brother Brahmaiah.
