Students of the Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) have developed a tricycle that enables physically challenged people ride easily on uneven and high gradient roads.
When the final year Mechanical Engineering students K. Sreepathi Naidu, K. Raja Reddy, P. Pavani and T. Nagarjuna embarked on a project entitled ‘Design and fabrication of tricycle that works on Kinetic Energy Recovery System’ under the guidance of Assistant Professor M. Subba Rao, little did they know that it would fetch them first prize in the ‘Foundation for Advancement of Education and Research’ (FAER) presentation, sponsored by Motorola Solutions Foundation, USA.
The annual event, considered a prestigious platform for engineering students from across the country to showcase their innovation on research knowledge, was held in Bengaluru last Friday, where the project was adjudged the best.
While riding a steep road, the physically challenged will have to put a lot of effort to tackle the gradient, but this device has a spring that stores the kinetic energy and enables the vehicle tackle the elevated road easily. The switch installed in the vehicle can be turned on to use the stored energy to climb elevation.
While coming down, the same technique can be used to control the vehicle’s speed. Of the 31 papers presented at the meet, MITS students got selected for the first prize at the national level and got a scholarship of Rs.75000. Principal C. Yuvaraj, mechanical head G. Harinath Goud and Dean M. Kumaraswamy congratulated the students.
